How to analyze a poem according to plan

Even poetic works are quite amenable to analysis "into components". Although students often have to deal with such analyses in their native language lessons, they still do not always understand how to analyze a poem and where exactly to start.

There is no single correct way to analyze a poem according to plan, but there are some basic points in the guidelines for such a task, and it is advisable to adhere to them in the analysis of a literary work.

When planning to analyze a poem, first of all, remember whose pen it belongs to. Also mention the name of this poetic creation. This is important because the title often contains the main idea of the verse. If the name is missing, try to explain why.

The next step in analyzing a poem is to determine the circumstances under which it was created. Relive the historical facts related to this creation. To whom is the verse dedicated, why did the author decide to write it at all, etc.?

Further analysis of the poem should be carried out at the level of determining its emotional coloring and genre. Are these poems written in sad, funny, or generally satirical tones? What are they: an ode, a sonnet, a poem, a ballad, an elegy, or something else?

It is impossible to analyze a poem without identifying its main idea, general themes (love, philosophical, political lyrics, etc.) and a specific theme. Then go on to search for the artistic means used by the poet to express his thoughts, first of all - tropes. All of them are listed in the diagram.

To further analyze the poem, look for all possible stylistic figures in its text: antitheses, inversion, refrains, omission, etc. It is possible that the author also used some means of poetic phonetics: assonance, epiphora, alliteration or anaphora. Find the lexical means present in the analyzed verse passage: archaisms, antonyms, neologisms, synonyms, etc. It will not be possible to analyze a poem without taking it apart in order to determine its size. The sequence of stressed syllables in them is indicated in the diagram.

However, it is possible that you are asked to analyze a poem written not in two- or three-syllable sizes, but without any clear stop structure at all. This happens if you have to deal with "white" poems, also called verlibres.

Determine the feature of the rhyme of the work (if any): steam room, ring room, cross room. Identify the image of the lyrical hero. When you finish analyzing the poem, describe your own impressions and thoughts about it. Tell me also how significant this work is for Russian and world literature.
